Introduction

“The Best Service You Will Ever Get” is Infinology’s well known headline.  This is an Internet Web hosting provider that has been around awhile – measured in Internet time – and they have gone through their share of changes (mergers, acquisitions).  We wanted to see how they were measuring up to this promise after all these years?  So we went to see firsthand, initially as a prospect and then as a customer.

The first thing that hit us about Infinology was that once you walked through the details of the packages they advertise on their web site – what you see is what you get.  The package features, functions and software that draw you in as a prospect are actually what you end up getting if you become a customer of this Internet Web hosting provider.  Mind you, that is not to say that others might falsify their claims, but it has been our experience that you have to read the fine print, ask questions and look carefully at what is being offered to make sure you get what you sign up for.

Initial Impression

So Infinology gets high marks for delivering on their promise so far.  And this provider offers quite a bit in their packages.  The Infinology service offerings include co-location, ecommerce and dedicated servers in addition to shared Web hosting services.  If you are not sure which set of products and services might be best for your business, you can call them and talk to a “live person” who – at least in our experience – walked through the features, functions and prices associated with each package and answered all of our questions, including reliability statistics for each level of service.  Just in case you wondered, their uptime guarantee is 99.9%, and they will reimburse you for downtime that falls below what their guarantee.  The rep offered helpful information in addition to what we asked for, which was nice since you do not want to feel like you are pulling teeth to get pretty routine information.  The rep shared that all their services are delivered from a single data center with sophisticated security.  After talking to them, we felt like we would have a good customer experience if we selected them.

If you follow who is buying who or the merger mania of the millennium (over now for the most part thank goodness!) in the Web hosting industry, then you know that Primemaster merged with Infinology in 2000.  As a note, Zerosetup became part of the fold as well, but as a reseller.  The companies still have separate website and sign-ups but Infinology, Primemaster and Zerosetup did become essentially the same company after they went through their series of mergers and acquisitions and reseller agreements.  Unfortunately for a brief time immediately after these activities, the more was not the merrier according to several customer reviews posted on the Web – one of which suggested that Zerosetup change their name to “ZeroValue”.  Ouch.  That may have been too harsh - all three companies enjoyed great reputations and were at one point in time recognized as offering an incredible list of features at very reasonable prices.  The issue of course – then and now if you are dealing with a provider with these types of problems - is that the greatest list of features is a waste of money – no matter the cost – is you can’t get at them.  We are happy to say that Infinology seems to have moved beyond this glitch in their past into vastly more positive territory.

So the transition and customer migration did have its rough spots, but as of 2003, Infinology was playing on top of their game as far as we could tell.  Now folks want to migrate on over to Infinology (as opposed to getting away) – and they of course can.  Infinology can host any domain name; however if you are registering a domain name or doing a transfer, that has to be on .com .net and/or .org domain names.  You will be responsible for registering and/or transferring the domain name yourself. Once your account is set up, Infinology will provide you with the proper name server settings to use when registering your domain name (from their Web site).

Price and Cost Effectiveness

In terms of price, Infinology does charge a setup fee in the neighborhood of $50.  This seems like expensive for Internet real estate, but if you compare the overall “what you get” with their service packages – especially compared to some others - the benefit does outweigh the cost.  For example many providers will give you “your space” for that amount – Infinology sweetens the deal with a most excellent amount of data transfer and pop3 mailboxes. 

They also offer a pretty awesome deal on their ecommerce hosting accounts.  All of these types of accounts come with enterprise ecommerce products, which means that you get everything you need to run an online store and you don’t have to buy extras after the fact.  They even offer some of their ecommerce packages with a free Merchant Account.  This is a very nice offer and we were impressed.

They occasionally run special promotions with bonuses – these aren’t worthless giveaways either.  On top of all of this, Infinology will give you a 30 day money back guarantee.

We did some asking around since this still seemed like a great deal for so little money, we were curious - what gives?  Despite our digging, the deal remained pretty straightforward, the only scoop we got is that Infinology really watches their overhead – they don’t spend a lot on advertising and they get servers from liquidations – but who doesn’t these days?  We did not have any problem with that and in fact were glad that they watched their costs.  If you find a provider that you like, the last thing you want to happen is that they run out of money to run the joint and go out of business.  Infinology spends their money where it counts; one other fact we did uncover was that their data center has a super sophisticated environmental control system – they do remote network monitoring to help avoid downtime and they have gargantuan, redundant UPSs - 1.5 Megabyte turbo diesel generator with over twelve hours of onsite fuel.  It seems like they really do not want to miss that uptime promise that they make to their customers!

Conclusion

In terms of the user friendliness, Infinology provides a Hsphere control panel, which has attractive icons and a text description of what they all do – this is a great advantage for the beginner.  It can be intimidating sometimes when you go to build your Web site and you get the funny feeling you are piloting the Star Ship Enterprise.  A good control panel can make all the difference and this is one thing that Infinology gets high marks for.

So the final verdict?  Yeah, we’ll give them their props for giving Internet Web hosting shoppers a clear description of products and services and then delivering on them.  Their Web site counsels, “Don't be fooled by hosting providers who offer unlimited resources.  You will eventually discover their numerous restrictions and overage charges.  With over 240,000 customers using the Infinology Master Control Panel 4.08, Infinology SmartConsumers is one of the largest premium hosting providers offering its customers “the best deal in existence.”
