Introduction

in 1999, the have spent a lot of money
on in-you-face advertising campaigns,
such as “great services 50 MB!! Yourname.com,
Unlimited Traffic, POP3, CGI-BIN, FTP -
for $7.77 per month”. They list twelve
reasons why you should give them your
business on their Web site. And they are
a dominant player because they are so
well known – most Internet Web hosting
providers do not spend the type of dough
that Powweb has on adverts.
The
company’s Linux platform servers
are company owned and operated –
there are real people there. They offer
a custom control panel, and promise to
keep on top of software upgrades. Their
site offers sign-on bonuses – if
you do select them as a provider, be sure
to take advantage of one of these offers.
Reliability
From
a reliability point of view, we got consistent
uptime over a 3 month period. The only
thing we noted that we were not pleased
about was slow response time during daytime
peak business hours. At the end of the
day, this is in fact a huge problem because
it translates directly into lost business
for the Web site owner. If you look at
their what they say about their infrastructure,
this response time issue does not make
sense. They are connected – according
to Powweb – to nine (count ‘em)
Tier 1 providers. This means that they
have more than full redundancy –
one provider goes down and another picks
ups the connection so you don’t have
interruption of service. Powweb is not
forthcoming with who these providers are.
We want to avoid finger pointing but this
scenario of what they claim to have and
the slow response times do not add up.
Customer
Relations
While
we did not expect customer technical support
to solve the slow performance issue, we
were pleased that we were able to easily
get someone on the phone during weekdays.
Also, we got good response from the 24
x 7 email support Powweb offers. They
supplement their technical support with
a forum for users so they can share issues
and answers. It is a good feature if you
have expert users. Otherwise you can find
yourself wasting your time trying to fit
someone else’s solution to your problem.
Conclusion
Powweb
is OK. Sad but true one of the things
we liked best was their money back guarantee.
They are not bad, they are not good –
these days companies that fall in between
are sort of the odd man out given what
everyone else is doing to win your business.
We think you can do better.
