Things to look for before signing up for web hosting account

By Staff

Now that you have selected a domain name and have a website address (URL), it’s time to think about getting the site hosted. Setting up a web hosting account can be a little daunting to the newbie, but once you know how to go about it, it is not as bad at it may seem.

To begin with there are several factors that need to be reviewed before trying to get a web hosting account. For instance, how you site was designed will play an important factor in getting an account. It makes a difference if you designed the site your self with web site building software or if you had a professional web site designer do it. Depending on how your site was created, you will need to find a web host that specifically supports that particular design, For example, if your website was created in FrontPage, you will need a host that supports FrontPage. If your site was created with Cold Fusion, then you will need to find a host that supports it. You get the point. So you must know how your site was created before proceeding to get a web hosting account, If you had a professional do it for you, check with him/her to get this information.  Once you have this information then the search for a reliable web host should begin.

 Finding a Reliable Web Host

It is extremely important that you find a good reliable web hosting company to host your web site. You will need to find one that can meet all your business needs and provide good customer service and technical support. This can be somewhat of a challenge but not impossible to do. It will take time and effort on your part and you should take care and caution before deciding on a host.

Start out with the “known” for instance, ask friends and family if they use a web host and who they use. Ask them how they like the service that they are getting and if they have had any problems with this host. Find out what type of response they get from customer service inquiries or technical support. If they are happy with this host and get good service, then maybe your search is over and you can contact the hosting company and get your site online.

If you need to you can also check the web for web hosts. Just one note of caution when visiting web host directories, it is possible that some of the listings are paid for and it is for that reason only that they are at the forefront.

The next thing to do is to search the net for information on the list of hosts that you will have made. Visit chat groups and forums for web hosting to get a feel for the types of things that people are discussing in regards to hosting. Note any negative experiences and so on so that you can stay away from those hosting companies.

If you do find a good reputable host, contact them. Ask any and all questions that you may have way before you sign up. Keep track of which hosting companies respond to your inquires and the speed of their response. This could be an indication of how they will handle your account in general. Make sure that they give you all the details and explain exactly what they can and cannot do for you. You don’t want to sign up with someone who just wants your business but gives you little in return.

Your First Web Hosting Account

Web hosts come in all styles and flavors. What I mean is that their offerings may vary as well as their costs. The key to choosing a good web-hosting plan is variety. Getting the most for your money should be at the top of your list.

Make sure that you choose a web host that can meet all your business needs and not one that offers things that you never will use. In addition, keep in mind that your business needs will change as time goes on so you need to take that into consideration and not only choose features that will support your business today, but also long into the future.

What if all of a sudden your business takes off and grows at a good pace, you will need a different set of tools to help manage the growth. If you sign up for a plan that inhibits the growth instead of supports it, you will have to find another web host and you don’t want to have to do that. It is far better to take your time and find one that can accommodate your needs today and tomorrow. Make sure to ask if they have an upgrade plan and inquire about any additional costs.

In regards to cost, some web hosting companies offer discounts if you prepay for a specific amount of time, let’s say one year in advance. Make sure to ask if they offer such discounts so that you can save money in the long run. One word of caution though, you may not want to do this until you have tried their services for while to get a feel for how they do business. After all you don’t want to be locked in with a deadbeat for a year. Again, don’t rush into anything, take the time to do your homework to save yourself some potential grief.
